Spicy Joint

by - May 27, 2017

Spicy Joint is a restaurant chain originated from Shanghai that focuses on Sichuan flavours. The traditional Chinese decor and uniform makes it hard to tell you are not in China. The restaurant is quite spacious with plenty of seating to cater to small groups as well as big.

People queuing outside the restaurant
During peak hour the wait time can be quite long, Mr Piggy and I came on a Saturday night around 6:30pm and waited in line for about 45mins.

At least once we sat down, our food came relatively fast except for one.

Green-Bean Jelly in Chili Sauce $7.80
These delicate noodles were made from mung bean powder, and flavoured with red chili oil, Sichuan pepper and other spices. A simple dish that was packed with flavours.

Chicken in Chili & Sichuan Pepper Sauce $19.80
The chicken was cooked to perfection, the meat was succulent and tender. The thick sweet sesame paste and chili oil really elevated the dish.

Chengdu Cold Noodles $3.90
These noodles went down quickly, because it was a small bowl...
Steam Beef Packed with Bamboo Leaves in Jinli Style $15.80
We ordered this dish because of the interesting presentation. The beef was marinated first and then covered in semi-grounded glutenous rice. The method of steaming the meat gave the meat a soft texture, while locking in the juice and flavour at the same time. However, we found the portion a little small.

Roast Pig's Elbow $20.80
We were quite full by the time the pork arrived, however when the aroma hit our noses magically more tummy room became available 😛 The thinly sliced meat was served on a hot sizzling pan and the chili powder gave the meat a nice kick. Unlike most Sichuan dishes where chili is essential, this dish would have been equally enjoyable without it.
