Our experience with fine dining is that it almost always starts high and ends low. Entrees are usually good and innovative, mains are typically standard and boring, and desserts are hit-and-miss. It is for this reason we have been to Bennelong bar several times but never the restaurant. We had to tick this one off our list, and we are glad we did as Bennelong proved the exception where we enjoyed all dishes.

A 3-course menu is available for lunch & dinner at $145, a 2-course menu option is also available for lunch. We went with the 3-course.

House Sourdough
Wild Kombucha by Ballsy $15
We are not big fans of the convenience store Kombucha variety, as it is usually made with black tea which we find too strong even for tea-lovers as we are. However, we have enjoyed several green tea/oolong Kombuchas at restaurants, which can be great options for non-drinkers. This one was clean and refreshing, almost like an exotic sparkling wine.

Badu Gili - "Water Light" $16
Badu Gili, what a beautiful name for a beautiful mocktail.

Moreton Bay Bug Dumpling
This dumpling was perfectly cooked with the bay bug tender and sweet, which was only bettered by the cabbage, which was so well seasoned and had fully absorbed the essence of the brown butter sauce.

Heirloom Summer Salad
Always a safe and vibrant entree for tomato lovers!

Sashimi of Coral Trout
An unusual combination and an excellent way to draw out the natural sweetness of the trout.

Red Prawn & Roasted Rice Congee
An interesting textural combination of gluey congee with crunchy roasted rice. We found this slightly too salty, which overpowered the sweetness of the coral prawn.

Slow Cooked Pork Belly
This pork belly is like a sponge soaked in umami and the smoked broth, completely rendering away in the mouth. I only wish it was bigger!

Blue-Eye Trevalla
Well executed pan fried fish with an interesting nutty sweet finish.

Steamed Local Pink Snapper
Compared to the trevalla this steamed snapper was a lighter dish, but not boring with a silky sauce and a touch of saltiness from the sea succulents.

Roast Wagyu Rump Cap
This thinly sliced wagyu rump cap was cooked to a beautiful blush, perfectly showcasing the marbling meat. Whilst rump is a tough cut, this was super tender and juicy. The Yorkshire pudding was a star on its own, with a surprise centre as the sweet onions and mushroom puree elevated it to another level. The horseradish emulsion gives it that zing element, and balanced out the meatiness.

Cherry Jam Lamington
This is the dish that we always look forward to the most when visiting Bennelong. We would have enjoyed it more if the coconut shavings were thinner/smaller, as they were on previous visits, to create that instant melt-in-the-mouth effect. We won't spoil it any further, this is something you have to try for yourself!

Green Mango Granita
A light and refreshing alternative to the lamington.

Creme Caramel vs Mille-Feuille
A decomposed creme caramel with salted caramel snaps. There is nothing to fault this dessert, but everyone's had creme caramel and this was not on par with the lamington in terms of impressiveness.

Petit Fours
Rather than the usual chocolate truffles, Bennelong's Petit Fours were a welcome conclusion to the meal. This moist spongy cake taste like brown sugar, which paired well with the coconut cream filling. This is something we'd happily order if it became a permanent addition to the menu.

Comparing to its older sister Quay, we prefer Bennelong's younger and more modern twist. As far as fine dining goes, this is one of the best we've been to and hands down the best in Sydney.

Food: 8/10
Service: 9/10
Atmosphere: 8.5/10

Highlight:
  • Wagyu rump & the Hermes of Yorkshire pudding was a great combo
Lowlight:
  • Lamington not the same as before

This is our first time coming to Quay, Mr Piggy and I were extremely excited also because we were invited here by our best friends for their wedding. Because of this very special day, we were able to enjoy good food with great company as well as the most stunning view you could get in Sydney!

Passion fruit and grapefruit mocktails were severed to begin the feast, followed by four starters. Each was interesting in its own way.

Prawn dumpling
Prawn dumpling - this deep fried dumpling had a crunchy outer shell while the inside was filled with small chunks of juicy and springy prawn meat.

Arancini with truffle
These crunchy rice balls carried a hint of truffle flavour.

Jamon
The jamon had a nice cured flavour to it, the richness of the oil from the meat went well with the crispy bread.

Scallop pearl
The scallop was very fresh and carried a hint of natural sweetness. It was shaped into a ball shape, which kind of resembled a real peal. The citrus topping gave it a refreshing touch.

Nothing better than freshly baked bread! When we got it, it was still hot. The golden crust was sooo crunchy, and when teared in half a soft and airy inside was revealed.

Uni, Koshihikari Rice, Cured Egg Yolk, Fish Maw, Ama Ebi, Umami Broth
Each rice grain was smooth and silky, almost like a Japanese version of risotto. The prawns were so fresh that they carried a slight sweetness. The umami broth was rich in flavour and brought everything to harmony.

Raw Smoked Blackmore Wagyu,
Horseradish Soured Cream, Fermented Rye Crisps, Raw Fungi
This dish sparked our eyes with an interesting presentation using two kinds of mushrooms. At first we thought the mushrooms might taste a bit earthy, but to our surprise they were very tasty with the beef. An innovative dish that brought out the most natural flavour of each ingredient.

Murray Cod, Luffa, southern Squid, Sea Cucumber Crackling, Sake, Lemon
The steamed cod was cooked perfectly, and topped with tender calamari rings. The thin sea cucumber crackling added extra texture to the dish.

Roasted Duck, XO Stone Pot Rice, Pickled Mountain Turnips
This roasted duck was quite lean, however the meat was still tender. The pickled turnips had a sour zingy flavour to it, and the rice tasted almost like a denser version of sticky rice cracker.

Snow Egg
Quay's signature dessert 'Snow Egg' is cleverly mastered to create an egg-like appearance. This dessert is served using seasonal ingredients, and our version consisted of strawberry guava granita, strawberry and rhubarb fool, and strawberry ice cream. The best part was the moment when the crispy meringue shell was cracked open and the the strawberry centre oozed out. The granita was a refreshment to the palate.

Quay’s Seven Texture Valrhona Chocolate Cake
This cake is another of Quay's signature cakes, so we had to get it without any doubt. A warm chocolate sauce was poured over the cake, it was quite a show.

A selection of cheeses
Dark chocolate & salted caramel
Vegan petits fours

The Sugar Club offers fine dining at the "highest level". Situated on level 53 of Auckland's Sky Tower, here you can enjoy a bird's eye view of the city below, only to be occasionally intruded by "SkyWalkers". We went as part of a large group and so had the benefit of ordering everything on the menu.

Seared yellowfin tuna (complementary)
This was a great starter, the lightly seared tuna was seated on a bed of marinated tapioca, which cleverly mimicked the texture and flavour of fish roe.

Hiramasa Kingfish - nori, cucumber, orange, peanuts, wasabi cream
Mackerel and Langoustine - smoked beetroot, miso egg yolk, apple, dill, deep-fried egg
Creamed paua, kiwi dip, frybread - chef Neil's tasty take on three kiwi classics
The paua dip was rich and creamy with chunks of abalone that added extra texture. The dip went really well with the crispy frybread.

Spiny crayfish and marlborough saffron linguine - pinenuts, aged parmigiano reggiano
Mushrooms - parfait, wood ear, shitake, black garlic, cacao porcini crumbs, ketchup
A dish with a simple name and a lot of meaning. The chef's clever combination of various textures and flavours of mushrooms created a powerful experience. This was a favourite for mushroom lovers like us.

Baked Ricotta - figs, baby carrots, rocket, smoked paprika almond praline
Hawkes bay lamb rump - smoked pumpkin kumara mash, tomato, bone marrow sauce
Seared venison - onion bhaji, mango chutney, avocado, passionfruit
Goat tagine - goats cheese spinach dumplings, grilled apricot, pistachio crumble, filo
Tempura blue pea inari - panch phoron spiced tomato pickles, rhubarb, guava
Five spiced quail - green tomato, duck liver parfait, aubergine, goji, sumac lavosh
Laksa with cloudy bay clams - spiced shellfish coconut broth, green tea noodles, crispy shallots, herbs
Line caught fish - tempura oyster, mussels, cucumber, dashi
A pre-dessert entremet (complementary)
Peanut butter parfait - moromi miso caramel, sesame, paprika, orange
The peanut butter parfait was rich and creamy. The sweet miso caramel and sesame gave it extra punch. This was our favourite dessert.

Strawberry yuzu meringue - blackcurrant tapioca, candied olives, strawberry basil sorbet
Original beans chocolate Cru Virunga 70% - sticky plums, pickled medjool dates, whipped ganache
Stonefruit brioche - caramel goats' milk ganache, thyme cream, white peach riesling sorbet

Food: 6/10
Service: 7/10
Atmosphere: 9/10

Highlight:
  • Creamed Paua, Mushrooms, and Peanut butter parfait
  • The view is well worth the money

Lowlight:
  • Most of the dishes were not memorable
  • Some dishes were over-spiced
