Hong Kong Bing Sutt Cafe & Co is like one of the many cafes that you'll find all over the streets and alley ways of Hong Kong. Unlike Western cafes, HK style cafes serve Canto-Western cuisine, which is unique to Hong Kong. As the name suggests Canto-Western cuisine is a combination of Cantonese and Western dishes served in the local way.

The dishes are simple and unsophisticated, including things like HK style milk tea, toasts, fried rice, and instant noodles (I can feel my tummy rumbling when thinking about these dishes 😆). However, they are very characteristic and part of the locals' way of life. So when Mr Piggy and I saw HK Bing Sutt we were very excited to try it!

These old mail boxes on the wall do create an authentic Hong Kong experience. The cafe itself isn't very big, which again makes it more authentic! During peak hour, you may be asked to share a table with other people, which is something the locals don't mind. The wait wasn't too bad, we waited for about 15mins on a Sunday afternoon before getting a seat.

Baked French Bread with Pork Chop & Fried Rice $24.80
Ummmmm so cheeeeesey... This was our first reaction when scooping into the bread, the melty cheese smelt so nice! The pork chop was covered in a light batter which made the meat super tender and juicy. The fried tomato rice had a hint of sweetness and sourness that balanced well with the pork and gave the dish extra depth.

Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab in Chili & Garlic Style $24.80
A delightful snack for sure, only the size was massive which wasn't very snack like. The soft shell crab was super crunchy and meaty, so glad you can just eat the whole thing without the fiddly work! We also loved the garlic and chili flavoring. I have to admit, I am a soft shell crab fan 😎

Fried Rice Noodle with Beef with House Made Swiss Sauce $12.80
There are so many items on the menu, it is always hard to choose. We got this dish to try, and although it looks just like the typical Fried Rice Noodle with Beef which doesn't come with Swiss sauce, it is sweeter, and we actually prefer the traditional version.

Tofu Fa (Soya Bean Custard) $10

Tofu Fa is literally like tofu's cousin, they are made using the same ingredients, only Tofu Fa is a less dense version of tofu. It can be sweet or savory depending on the topping. HK Bing Sutt serves a sweet one with brown sugar and syrup. The soy bean flavour was quite noticeable, and the texture was even softer than panna cotta. Base on your own preference, you can add in the sugar and syrup accordingly.

Yuanyang (Coffee Mixed with Milk Tea)-Cold $5.30
We initially wanted to get the Iced Milk Tea (served in a bottle), however it was sold out so we went with the Yuanyang instead. It turned out to be a good decision, the milk tea paired well with the espresso coffee, it had a nice coffee aroma as well as a creamy milk flavour. The sweetness was just right.

Two happy piggies at the end of the meal, and yes we will be back for the dishes which we didn't get to try.

Spicy Joint is a restaurant chain originated from Shanghai that focuses on Sichuan flavours. The traditional Chinese decor and uniform makes it hard to tell you are not in China. The restaurant is quite spacious with plenty of seating to cater to small groups as well as big.

People queuing outside the restaurant
During peak hour the wait time can be quite long, Mr Piggy and I came on a Saturday night around 6:30pm and waited in line for about 45mins.

More people queuing inside the restaurant
At least once we sat down, our food came relatively fast except for one.

Green-Bean Jelly in Chili Sauce $7.80
These delicate noodles were made from mung bean powder, and flavoured with red chili oil, Sichuan pepper and other spices. A simple dish that was packed with flavours.

Chicken in Chili & Sichuan Pepper Sauce $19.80
The chicken was cooked to perfection, the meat was succulent and tender. The thick sweet sesame paste and chili oil really elevated the dish.

Chengdu Cold Noodles $3.90
These noodles went down quickly, because it was a small bowl...
Steam Beef Packed with Bamboo Leaves in Jinli Style $15.80
We ordered this dish because of the interesting presentation. The beef was marinated first and then covered in semi-grounded glutenous rice. The method of steaming the meat gave the meat a soft texture, while locking in the juice and flavour at the same time. However, we found the portion a little small.

Roast Pig's Elbow $20.80
We were quite full by the time the pork arrived, however when the aroma hit our noses magically more tummy room became available 😛 The thinly sliced meat was served on a hot sizzling pan and the chili powder gave the meat a nice kick. Unlike most Sichuan dishes where chili is essential, this dish would have been equally enjoyable without it.

You might not have heard of Sasaki, but you may have heard of Cafe Cre Asion. That's right, Mr Sasaki is the owner of both, and Cre Asion is one of the most visited cafes in Sydney.

Sasaki serves Japanese home cooking in the traditional Japanese way. You almost feel like you are in Japan. The setting gives a home-like feeling (at least a Japanese home) through a simple and plain decor - a concept of 'simplicity'.

The restaurant is small - 5 small tables and a bench fit around 22 people. The dishes and the menu text are small too, the consistent theme is small and delicate, even if it's overdone to get the message across.

Prawns, Apple & Coriander $17
These crustaceans were sweet and tender, a refreshing starter to begin the evening.

Egg & Crab $11
Chawanmushi (steamed egg) is a favourite of our's when visiting a Japanese restaurant. This one was no different, the soft jelly-like egg had a hint of crab flavour and came with a generous amount of crab meat on top.

Takimono (braised dish) $10
The takimono of the day was octopus with potatoes topped with powered bonito. These little tentacles were braised until soft and tender, and went really well with the humble potatoes.

Mushroom, Egg & Cheese $21
We liked the creativity of this dish, the mushrooms were coated with a thin batter and fried until crunchy (almost like a vegetarian popcorn chicken). The mushrooms were bathing in cheesy Gruyere foam with a running egg yolk at the bottom for extra smoothness. An interesting dish for sure.

Beef, Red Wine, Miso & Potato $24
You can never say no to meat that just melts in your mouth, and this is the dish. The beef cheek was rich and the mash was buttery.

Rice, Chicken & Mushroom $11
This was probably the most humble dish of the night, the rice had absorbed the flavour of the mushroom and chicken.

Pork, Salt & Daikon $26
The pork was cooked inside a salty dough and the fatty part was charred, which gave it a smoky aroma. The meat tasted quite light, and a slice of daikon with a spoon of miso paste helped to lighten up this dish. An interesting way of cooking the pork.

The dough was nice and charred and we were tempted to take a bite, however we didn't wish to get a salt overdose...

Apple, Rhubarb & Custard $7; Potato & Butter $5; Caramel & Nuts $6 (Left to Right)
All three desserts were bite-size, which was kind of consistent with the rest of the dishes. The apple, rhubarb & custard almost felt like apple crumble in a tart shell. The ingredients worked out well together.

Even though it said on the menu 'Potato & Butter', what we got was actually sweet potato and adzuki bean. This dessert was made of two thin sheets of sweet potato with a small nob of adzuki bean in the centre. We felt it was rather simple and were a little disappointed.

We liked the presentation of this little dessert, it was quite adorable to look at. The sugar glazed nuts and caramel ganache were burgered inside this thin waffle shell, which reminded me of a Korean ice cream which also comes in a waffle shell.

At the end of our meal, Mr Piggy and I concluded the restaurant gave us an overall feel of 'fine dinning' in Japanese home cooking. Each dish was rather small in portion, which made it not very ideal for sharing, especially for more than two people.

Little Jean is nested in the main stretch of restaurants in Double Bay, with a spacious modern decor. We dropped in on a weekend for a lazy brunch, and the menu was impressive offering a nice selection of brekkie choices as well as proper lunch.

Corned Beef & Brie 'Cubano' Sandwich, Fried Egg, Piparres, Aji Amarillo $18
When the sandwich arrived it looked amazing, the runny egg yolk was so lively as if it was talking. The corned beef was tasty and tender, paired with a peppery Aji Amarillo sauce.

Mixed Leaf, Bacon, Rye Crumb, Soft Egg, Parmesan Dressing $18
Suppl. Whole Baby Rainbow Trout (NSW), Lemon, Thyme $18
Loved the salad, the mixed leaves were fresh and crunchy with shaved parmesan on top. We love a little meat in our food and thought even a beautiful salad might not satisfy us fully, so we got a baby trout to 'meat' up the salad. Even though it was a baby trout, it was still reasonably big. The fish was cooked perfectly, the meat could fall off the bone easily. There was a nice spiced flavour to it, definitely a delish.

Hash Browns $4.5ea
These house made hash browns were interesting. The outer layer was cooked until golden brown, and the inside was filled with mashed potato and sweet corns. However, it wasn't exactly what we were looking for.
