Situated below Sky Tower Auckland, Huami offers an extensive menu focusing on Cantonese fare including dim sum that is both traditional and creative. During the day dim sum can be ordered a la carte or in the old fashioned style from steel trolleys. The dinner menu has a stronger focus on more classic dishes from the Southern and Northern regions.

We have been here for lunch and dinner on two separate occasions and found the dim sum was inconsistent, other than that everything else was great.

Siew Mai NZ$9
The siew mai consisted of minced chicken, shiitake mushroom and bites of chunky prawns. The flavours worked well together and the XO chili added a mild burning sensation to the tongue.

Ha Kao NZ$12
These prawn dumplings were plump and juicy, with a delicate skin that was transparent and smooth. Ha Kao is a dish that can determine the skill of a dim sum chef by judging the number of pleats on the skin - 10+ pleats is consider to master level. The truffle on top gave it an earthy aroma.

Squid Ink, Yellow Chives, Prawn Dumpling NZ$9
I want to say good concept, but failed execution. The prawn filling was ok, however the skin was dense and hard, which affected the entire texture of the dumplings. The salmon roe wasn't fresh as it had an uneven and bumpy appearance.

Baked Crunchy Char Siew Chicken Bun NZ$9

A crowd pleaser the buns were - the bread was airy and soft with a  thin layer of sweet crispy coating on top. When biting into the bun the sweet and sticky caramelised chicken filling rushes out quickly. These buns were heavenly good that words cannot do them justice.

Deep-Fried Crispy Taro Puff, Scallop, Chicken NZ$9
These flaky taro puffs were so addictive, a crispy outside versus a soft gooey centre. The inside was packed with a generous amount of saucy minced chicken and mushy-soft taro. Finally it is topped up with a fatty slice of scallop.

Crystal Seafood Dumpling NZ$9
Despite the name "Seafood Dumpling" these dumplings had no seafood in them. The name in Chinese actually says "Shark fin Dumpling", but it really means imitation shark fin - which is made with vermicelli. The skin had the right texture, and the inside consisted of minced meat and vegetables as well as "shark fin". Flavour-wise, the dumplings were quite flat and bland.

Warm Egg Custard Layer Cake NZ$10
Another highlight - this cake is a classic dish for yum cha, and it was the best by far out of every take we have tried in the past. The cake was amazingly soft and moist, the warm egg custard layers are common, but we were glad they were there. Not only did they act like a cream filling, it also enriched the overall texture of the cake.

Dim Sum Platter NZ$20
You can order this platter for dinner, which lets you sample 4 different dumplings - Crystal Crab Meat, Steamed Saffron & Vegetables, Ha Kao with truffle, and Siew Mai. The dumplings for dinner were surprisingly much better than lunch.

Live Abalone (stir fried in XO sauce) NZ$180 each
New Zealand abalone, known locally as Pāua, is a local delicacy. If you haven't tried it, its worthwhile getting it at a Chinese restaurant. You get to pick one from the live tank and ask it to be cooked however you like. We went for stir fry with XO sauce, which I highly recommend. It is quite pricey but likely a decision you won't regret. The abalone had the texture of a firm mushroom and was full of umami.

Clay Pot Duck and Chestnut NZ$36
Small chunks of duck is braised with chestnut and garlic in a rich and thick sauce. The dark soy-flavoured sauce is the highlight of this dish, which goes well with rice. However the ingredients themselves didn't fully immerse in the flavour.

Fruit Wood-Roasted Peking Duck NZ$78 (Whole) or $40 (Half)
A classic Beijing dish, roast duck enjoyed in a paper-thin pancake wrap with garnish and Hoisin sauce. Huami served the best iteration we have had outside of Beijing with perfectly crispy skin and lean and tender meat, where the fat has rendered away. The duck was roasted using fruit wood and had a mesmerizing aroma. When this dish arrived, our table became dead quiet and a frantic duck wrapping factory.

Quick-Fried String Bean, HK Olive Leaves NZ$18
Beans stir fried in olive leaves is a staple dish in Chinese restaurants, it all comes down to the chef's control of the flame and wok in action. Simple goodness.

Inconsistent dumplings cost an otherwise high score.

Located in the heart of Sydney's CBD, Mr Wong offers a premium yum cha experience for lunch. Here you won't see any traditional trolleys being pushed around, instead you order a la carte. The menu offers a mix of traditional and creative dim sum, while the restaurant is decorated with an oriental inspired look across two floors.

There was a truck load of duck ready to be roasted in the kitchen, however the duck isn't for Mr Piggy and I. We found the skin wasn't as crispy as we were expecting when we ordered it during a previous visit (so we stayed true to yum cha this time, except for dessert 😝).

Lobster & Scallop Dumpling $15
Despite an impressive set of ingredients, when ordering this dish, we were prepared for the worst. Cooking lobster requires technique and skill. When overcooked the crustacean can be rubbery and tough. The good news was these lobster dumplings turned out to be succulent and full of flavour, we couldn't have asked for more.

King Prawn & Bamboo Shoot Dumpling $12
Prawn and bamboo shoot dumplings are something that is always on the menu at every yum cha restaurant. Mr Wong's version was on point, the prawns were beautiful and fresh.

Wild Mushroom Dumpling $12
These mushroom dumplings weren't as good as the ones we had last time.

Prawn & Crispy Dough Rice Roll $16
I'm in love with this prawn cheung feng roll. The rice skin was smooth and silky, it was almost as thin as paper. In contrast the deep fried prawns and dough gave it a nice crunch, so you get the best part of both worlds.

Wagyu & Truffle Puff $15
This was a winner for us, the flaky puffy pastry falls apart in your mouth. The wagyu meat was so tender and was packed with a peppery and truffle aroma.

Steamed BBQ Pork Buns $12
If time could go back, we wish we hadn't ordered this dish. The bun was soft and fluffy. However, the filling was dry and lacking in flavour. It didn't live up to the traditional BBQ pork bun that is filled with saucy tender BBQ pork.

Golden Swan $15 (special of the day)
These swan pastries were just too pretty to be eaten, but we did what we had to do (we did serve them justice by taking lots of photos). Like the waygu puffs, each layer was well defined and perfectly crispy. The duck meat filling was soft and tender.

Green Tea "Tres Leches" Cake $17
What we liked about this cake was that the matcha and yuzu flavours went really well together. The sponge was soaked with liquidy matcha, that made every bite enjoyable. What we didn't like was there was way too much yuzu cream on the top that made the cake a little too heavy.

Want to experience Hong Kong street food without making a trip to Hong Kong? Queen Chow is the place for you! Chefs Patrick Friesen and Christopher Hogarth make regular trips to Hong Kong to absorb the essence and spirit of Hong Kong street food. They bring locally inspired dishes to our tables in Oueen’s Hotel in Enmore.
Queen Chow Steamed Dim Sum Platter $32
The platter comes with eight pieces of dim sum with two each of four different kinds:

Xiao long bao: This dumpling is pinched together to seal the top which creates a cascade of ripples. The inside is filled with minced pork and soup. Be careful when taking your first bite as it is very hot. Personally I found the pork had a slight odor, which is a minus.

Scallop dumpling: A generous amount of prawns were used in the dumpling, topped with a slice of  scallop. The dumplings are cooked perfectly, the scallops and prawns complement each other.

Jade dumpling: I think spinach was the only ingredient used in the filling, taste wise it was good but could be more interesting.

Fungi dumpling: This dumpling is filled with mixed mushrooms, a small dumpling  that is packed with flavours.

Chong Qing hot and numbing chicken wings $18
Chong Qing hot and numbing chicken wings was the second dish to come. As soon as this dish landed on our table, we could smell the numbness of the Sichuan pepper (This spice is widely used in Sichuan cooking). It really rang the bell for me, and I was drooling...a right amount of Sichuan pepper was added to this dish and the numbness was just right, it couldn't be more or less. The chicken wings were deep fried and so they were crispy on the outside and tender+juicy on the inside. The only negative thing is that the dish was slightly on the salty side, we ended up getting a bowl of rice.

Stir fried milk, prawns, prawn roe, tobiko, fried bread stick $24
At first I did not know what to expect from this dish, the only thing I recognise is the fried bread stick, which is traditionally eaten with soy milk for breakfast. After trying this dish, the creamy and tofu-like texture of the stir fried milk reminded me of something that I had in the past when I was a child. Have you ever had that feeling when trying some food and the taste is so familiar, something that you might have had a long time ago and that taste is imprinted in your memory? I quite like this dish, and enjoy the idea of eating the stir fried milk with the bread stick.
Honey glazed pork spareribs $21
We had a bit of drama when we got our honey glazed pork spareribs, my instinct told me there was something wrong with the dish. I was expecting the ribs to be attached to bones, and what we got was a plate of meat that was boneless. Then I remembered another dish on the menu, honey glazed pork neck...and I thought maybe they got the order mixed up. Just before the waiter was about to leave, we stopped him and asked what the dish was and he said "honey glazed pork neck". We told him we ordered the spareribs. Without thinking he immediately said "Oh, that is the honey glazed pork spareribs". Even though he noticed that we didn't look convinced, he turned his head and walked away immediately.

We really wanted the spareribs because the pork neck looked like typical char siu that you can get elsewhere, so we talked to a girl and told her about the mix up. She saw the pork neck and said "that's the honey glazed pork neck" and said she will take it back to the kitchen. Everyone makes mistakes, the guy could have simply apologised and taken the dish back, it wasn't even his fault the order got mixed up.

Luckily we stayed with the spareribs, the meat and fat ratio was just right. When you bite into the meat it is tender and juicy, with no impression of greasiness. A succulent dish for sure, highly recommended!

For dessert we ordered the forgotten koi fish in the frozen pond and coffee milk tea. The Chinese translation for these two dishes on the menu were both slightly off, which turned out kind of funny if you can read Chinese.
The forgotten koi fish in the frozen pond $15
This dish was pleasant for the eye as well as for the tummy, the two pieces of mango pudding were shaped like koi fish with a splash of red and black added to resemble the real thing (Got to praise the effort). The mango flavour really came through and the texture was silky and smooth. A bit of granita was used to remind you of the frozen pond. The mango sorbet on top was smooth and refreshing, apart from that it was a little too sour for me.
Coffee milk tea $15
The coffee milk tea is like a fansy version of the your everyday milk tea. A generous scoop of milk tea ice cream sits on top a few bite-sized chocolate and creme brulee sponge cakes and some mini salted caramel balls.  The dessert is then topped up with coffee cream which is light and airy.

All the dishes were satisfying for the taste buds. We were most impressed with the desserts and it was hard to pick which one we liked better, so I voted for the coffee milk tea and Piggy voted for the forgotten koi fish in the frozen pond.
