Situated in the lower North Shore, within 10 mins walking distance from St Leonard's station, Mas.Que brings traditional Taiwanese comfort food like slow braised pork on rice and fried chicken to the table. There is also burger and pasta available for people that are after the usual cafe staples.

Taiwan Classic Bowl $15
Slow braised pork on rice is a staple dish in Taiwan, and every family has their own version. Pork belly is the preferred cut for this dish, it is cooked in five-spice and soy until fork tender. I've got to say this slow braised pork ticked all the boxes for us. The pork was the right mix of lean meat and fat, which made it super tender, everything just melts in the mouth.

Slow Braised Pork On Rice
The egg rolls on the side were perfectly cooked to the extent the outside was silky and the centre was semi-runny (just the way I like it). We were also in love with the homemade kimchi with pumpkin puree, it was acidic, sweet and crunchy. The kimchi helped to lighten everything down (unfortunately they don't serve this anymore).

Fried Chicken
As part of the Taiwan Classic Bowl, the fried chicken was well seasoned with a super crunchy coating, while the inside remained tender and juicy. Honestly, I think this classic bowl set is under-valued, the food was great quality and the portion was generous.

Truffle Mushroom Pasta $22
The pasta was al dente, and it had a strong truffle aroma. However, it didn't wow us. It's good, but don't expect authentic Italian pasta here.

Black Pearl X Brown Sugar Milk $7
We were gravitated to try this brown sugar and condensed milk drink. It was nice and chilled, you can really taste the brown sugar in the background. What's missing is the tea - Mas.Que was careful not to call it milk tea. Perhaps the whole point is to let the brown sugar be the spotlight - if so then it certainly did.

Food: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Atmosphere: 7/10

Highlight:
  • Slow braised pork was amazingly good!
  • Fantastic value for the classic bowl set (the portion had reduced when we went back for the second time)
  • Friendly staff that went through the dishes with us
Lowlight:
  • We were full after the mains and didn't have room for dessert. Must come back!
