Want to enjoy a late night dessert in the CBD? Here is another place you can add to the list. Hong Kong Day Dessert, just off Chinatown and open till late, offers traditional Hong Kong style desserts. Even the setting is authentic - a small and buzzy environment.
Matcha & Red Beans Snow Ice $14 |
You can taste that the matcha isn't top quality, and the texture of the shaved ice was coarse rather than fine and cotton-like. The red bean centered Daifuku was probably store bought, and we felt it was unnecessary. The whole thing was very sweet (and big). We only managed to get through the tip of the iceberg.
Earl Grey Crepe Cake $11.50; HK Style Milk Tea (in the background) $6.5 (L) |
I'm glad we got this crepe cake, the tea flavour was strong and aromatic. The cake consisted of layers of thin crepe sheets and earl grey cream, plus an earl grey jelly on top - a nice contrast of textures.
HK style milk tea, compared to the more popular bubble tea, is richer and has an unique flavour from the evaporated milk. We enjoyed this one, which had an authentic flavour.
Hong Kong Day Dessert is about to open three more shops in Chatswood, Burwood and Hurstville. Hopefully that will make it easier for those who want to enjoy a late night HK style dessert.
