Located inside an office building, it's hard to notice this French bistro if you don't know to look for it. Guillaume is keen to bring a true french experience with some of the classics including snails, parfait, tartare just to name a few. The restaurant's blue tone and dim lighting help set a relaxing and intimate mood.

Chicken Liver Parfait w Pear Chutney $20
We are not big fans of offal, it is something that falls under the category of acquired taste - it is something that you either love or hate. This parfait had an intense flavour, the paste was smooth and can be easily spread out. On the side, the salad was pretty much a pile of basic greens while the bread was stale (showing little effort).

Country Style Terrine $21

This slice of compressed meat was served cold, with a good amount of seasoning and a slight firm texture. It was better enjoyed alone than having it with the bread and the salad.

Escargot En Persillade $24 per doz
For some eating snails can be a mentally challenging task, but once you overcome that barrier you'll find it tastes just like prawns or other shellfish. These crawly creatures were baked in garlic butter, and when they arrived at our table they were still burning hot. The meat had a springy texture and a rich buttery and parsley aroma, the only drawback was the well of oil - simply too oily.

Steak Tartare w Pommes Gaufrettes $28 (S)
Another French classic - steak tartare is made with fresh raw beef that is finely diced and then marinated with onions, capers and other seasoning. The beef was fresh and coated with marinate and aided with thinly sliced potato wafers. We liked how the potato wafers were fried perfectly, but found the marinate had a dominant tomato flavour (almost like ketchup), which overpowered the other flavours.

Twice Baked Soufflé w Roquefort Sauce $21
A toothsome dish that is made to impress - the picture says it all. It was airy, fluffy and heavenly good - the pool of melted cheese was super cheesy. I'm glad we got the smallest size, because it was quite a heavy dish.

Passionfruit Soufflé w Creme Anglaise & Passionfruit Ice Cream $25
You can't call it a French meal without getting dessert. The soufflé had the perfect rise, with a beautiful passionfruit fragrance and was teamed with a scoop of passionfruit ice cream. The choice of ice cream was a bit of an overlap to the soufflé in our opinion, perhaps switching to a creamy element could better compliment the acidity. A light dessert option for those who are watching their weight.

Opera Gateau w Coffee Ice Cream $20
Guillaume had mastered this cake well. Each layer of almond sponge was soaked in a coffee syrup, and separated with a thin ganache. The coffee ice cream was milky and rich. Everything was spot on.

As far as food goes, it isn't groundbreaking, but the menu certainly tick the boxes for classic French food.

Food: 7/10
Service: 6/10
Atmosphere: 7/10

Highlight:
  • Good desserts
  • Amazing soufflés
Lowlight:
  • French pub food at fine dining prices
  • Guillaume is clearly a restaurant that caters to the corporate lunch market, and not the ideal choice for casual diners

Combining Swedish and Japanese flavours, Sven-San aims to bring a new twist to modern Australian food. Located at the end of the fashion district in Paddington, the restaurant brings a relaxing atmosphere with a classic Scandinavian style of modern furniture, wooden floor and so on. Just like the setting, the plating of the dishes was also quite simple - sometimes less is more.

Sushi "Cake" (Like A Disc) Mixed Sashimi Grade Seafood $20
I'm guessing this dish got it's name from the way it resembled a round cake. Fresh slices of tuna and salmon were stacked around and over a rice base to complete the "cake". The presentation was interesting, however this dish was a little difficult to share.

Salt & Pepper Calamari, Yuzu Salt $16
These calamari rings were covered in a light batter and fried until crispy and served with a creamy mayo.

Prawn "Skagen Toast"
Toast Skagen is a traditional Scandinavian snack consisting of prawns mixed with mayo, fresh herbs and seasonings served on toasted bread. The combination of ingredients and flavours married incredibly well together - it was eggy, zingy and light. The buttery brioche made this a more luxurious version. Plump fish roe act as decoration and give it more umami.

Smashed Edamame "Hummus" $12
Sven-San is taking hummus a little further by replacing chickpeas with edamame to incorporate a Japanese element. While we liked the mild buttery flavour of the edamame, we found it quite acidic (perhaps the chef was a little too generous on the lemon).

Prawn Crackers (comes with the hummus)
How about a trio of chips to go with the hummus? I certainly like the sound of that. So in the bowl there were sweet potato chips, sesame crackers and prawn crackers. Our favourite was the sweet potato, it was thin and crispy.

Fried Sushi Rice, Shitake Mushrooms, Pumpkin + 63° Egg & Shaved Bonito $26
Unlike Chinese style fried rice, this particular fried rice had a creamy and buttery taste with a sticky finish, we liked how it was different to the usual fried rice. Additionally, strips of bonito and an Onsen Tamago (soft-cooked egg) with silky egg white and a custard-like yolk were added to put a full-stop to the dish. No wonder this is one of Sven-San's signature dishes.

Octopus (Twice Cooked, Finished On The Coals) $28
Another crowd-pleaser dish - the tentacles were cooked until fork tender. The mix of fresh and pickled veg paired well together, which helped balance the smokiness of the octopus.

Malted Chocolate Cake w Salted Caramel Sauce & Golden Gay-Time Gelato $15
Here is a dessert that will please the sweet-toothers out there. The chocolate cake had a dark rich flavour, and was covered with a sticky caramel sauce and a scoop of ice cream. For us, we prefer it to be on the less sweet side, but if you like it sweet, then this is your cup of tea.

Sven-San is one of the few places in Sydney we'd look to come back when they rotate their menu.

Highlight:
  • Skagen toast & fried rice were our favourites
  • Good value
  • The lady that served us was lovely

  • The crackers were a little stale
  • Chocolate cake was a little sweet

The arrival of Juan caused quite a stir among the foodie community in Sydney. For that reason, Mr Piggy and I waited for the heat to fade before coming here. Just like a typical Japanese restaurant, the decoration is simple and minimal. The restaurant is small with limited tables (make sure you book in advance).

Unagi Hitsumabushi $28
There are quite few places in town that serve Japanese don, but not many that can match the quality of the ingredients used here at Juan. That's why they can charge ~$30 per bowl instead of the usual $15. The eel was chopped into strips and served on a multi-grain rice bed that was soaked in sweet soy sauce. Everything was then sealed with an egg omelette blanket.

The don also came with toppings including nori, puffed rice and premium wasabi. What we liked about the bowl was that all the ingredients were high quality. What we didn't like was there was no "wow" factor in this dish. For the price and hype we were expecting top-notch execution, which wasn't there.

Tonkatsu $23
The katsu looked amazing and sounded amazing on the menu, but when it came to the taste test we were quite disappointed. You can taste the pork is good quality, but we felt the cut wasn't carefully picked. The main reason been there was a big chunk of fat attached on the lean meat which was firm and greasy.

We were hoping the fat would kind of melt away in the mouth after 2 hours of cooking (which they claim). It would have been better if they had discard the fatty part. Notwithstanding this, we liked the house made apple mustard mayo and miso sesame sauce.

Today's Dessert - Matcha Tiramisu $12
At last something that did meet our expectations...The matcha tiramisu was alternating between thin layer of matcha sponge and smooth matcha mousse. We loved how this dessert was light and smooth, the bitterness of the matcha was spot on.

So why is this place so popular? That is still a mystery to us. W
e have heard positive feedback from our friends about their experience at Juan, which was quite different to ours. Perhaps we came on a bad day.

Food: 6/10

Service: 5.5/10
Atmosphere: 6.5/10

Highlight:

  • Good quality ingredients
  • Matcha tiramisu
Lowlight:
  • Flavours didn't live up to the hype
  • We visited months after they'd opened (initially reviewers reported poor service), and found the service still had plenty of room to improve

Ramen-lovers are in for a treat with the newly opened Gogyo situated in Surry Hills. The venue is relatively big, and already packed with people.

Wagyu Sukiyaki Spring Roll $5ea
For starters we got the wagyu spring roll. The beef had a smoky kick, and the caramelised onion added a sweet note. The soft centre was well complimented by the crunchy pastry.

Twice-Cooked Pork Belly $24
The pork belly was perfectly cooked so that the whole thing just rendered away in the month. It was packed with flavours, and with the mustard sauce it almost reminded me of a cheese burger, only much better!

Chicken Sasami Jerky $8
This is not your typical jerky. Instead of using beef or pork, Gogyo chose a white meat. Unlike traditional jerky, the chicken is not dried completely, but semi-dried which gives it a bit of chewiness. It had a compact flavour, the charring on the outside also gave it a smoky touch.

Chilli Shoyu $17
If spicy is your thing then this chilli shoyu ramen is probably your cup of tea. The thin al dente noodles were bathing in a spicy chicken broth accompanied by toppings including spicy pork mince, bamboo shoot and fresh tomato. We were surprised by the level of chilliness in this ramen (considering it's a Japanese restaurant), it was so hot that even for a chilli-lover like myself I found it hard to swallow. Other than that, everything else was good.

Kogashi Miso $18
The charred miso was an interesting element, and combined with the chicken broth it gave the ramen a rich and creamy body. The slices of chashu were tender and succulent, the half egg had a beautiful runny centre. This ramen exceeded our expectations, I'm not afraid to say it was probably the best ramen we have had in Sydney.

Mango Bongo $12
We got a bit greedy at the end, rather than getting two servings of desserts, we got THREE😅! This mango dessert was light and refreshing, the base consisted of a citrussy yuzu mousse and a thin layer of crumble. Last but not least, a scoop of coconut ice cream and fresh chunks of mango were added on top.

Red Bean Taiyaki; Nutella Taiyaki $10ea

Taiyaki is a classic Japanese street snack that has a fish-like shape, traditionally it is filled with red bean paste. We got both the red bean and the nutella to try and each came with a scoop of sobacha (buckwheat tea) sorbet. The fish shell was almost like a chewy pancake, with the outer shell slightly crispy. As for the sorbet, we found it quite creamy and really enjoyable. The tea flavour really shined through.

Situated in the lower North Shore, within 10 mins walking distance from St Leonard's station, Mas.Que brings traditional Taiwanese comfort food like slow braised pork on rice and fried chicken to the table. There is also burger and pasta available for people that are after the usual cafe staples.

Taiwan Classic Bowl $15
Slow braised pork on rice is a staple dish in Taiwan, and every family has their own version. Pork belly is the preferred cut for this dish, it is cooked in five-spice and soy until fork tender. I've got to say this slow braised pork ticked all the boxes for us. The pork was the right mix of lean meat and fat, which made it super tender, everything just melts in the mouth.

Slow Braised Pork On Rice
The egg rolls on the side were perfectly cooked to the extent the outside was silky and the centre was semi-runny (just the way I like it). We were also in love with the homemade kimchi with pumpkin puree, it was acidic, sweet and crunchy. The kimchi helped to lighten everything down (unfortunately they don't serve this anymore).

Fried Chicken
As part of the Taiwan Classic Bowl, the fried chicken was well seasoned with a super crunchy coating, while the inside remained tender and juicy. Honestly, I think this classic bowl set is under-valued, the food was great quality and the portion was generous.

Truffle Mushroom Pasta $22
The pasta was al dente, and it had a strong truffle aroma. However, it didn't wow us. It's good, but don't expect authentic Italian pasta here.

Black Pearl X Brown Sugar Milk $7
We were gravitated to try this brown sugar and condensed milk drink. It was nice and chilled, you can really taste the brown sugar in the background. What's missing is the tea - Mas.Que was careful not to call it milk tea. Perhaps the whole point is to let the brown sugar be the spotlight - if so then it certainly did.

Food: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Atmosphere: 7/10

Highlight:
  • Slow braised pork was amazingly good!
  • Fantastic value for the classic bowl set (the portion had reduced when we went back for the second time)
  • Friendly staff that went through the dishes with us
Lowlight:
  • We were full after the mains and didn't have room for dessert. Must come back!
