Chin Chin, one of Melbourne's trendiest restaurants launched in Sydney in early October this year, along with some of it's signature dishes as well as some brand new creations. When it hit Sydney it was probably THE buzzword in town, and probably still is. Despite it being a 160-seat restaurant, booking isn't an option for dinner for small groups of less than 6.

So we thought we would try our luck by getting to the restaurant at 6:30pm. We were told the wait would be about 2 hours, which then got pushed back to 3 hours (we visited mid-November on a Saturday). I guess the idea is that while you are waiting, you can grab a drink from Chin Chin's GoGo Bar which is literally next door, so be prepared to spare your whole evening (bar food menu is available).

I did come across some comments on of their customer service (and I don't mean it in a pleasant way), so Mr Piggy and I were prepared, but we weren't prepared enough for what felt like an endless long wait. We had to deal with extremely rude staff at the front desk. However, things did get better after we were seated, our waiter of the night was very attentive and had a much better attitude.

It is understandable when new restaurants open they may have teething problems. At least the food, whilst I'm not sure if it is worth the wait, was certainly good.

Pad Seuw $20.50
We found this dish quite creative, instead of the usual flat rice noodles, Chin Chin used these rolled up rice noodles, which absorbed double the flavours. They were topped up with braised Wagyu Beef and Chinese greens.

Stir Fry Prawn, Bug Tail, Egg Noodle $29.50
This dish reminded us of Mee Goreng noodles that were spicy, salty and sweet - waking up all our taste buds. The interesting combination of ingredients meant the texture was different on every bite.

Butter Chicken $21.5
Butter chicken can come in many variations, and we found this one on the sour side, which was a little different to the ones that we have had in the past. It was still creamy and buttery.

Roti Basket (2pcs) $5.50
What is curry's best friend? Roti (ok or naan!) would be my answer! These rotis had a nice crispy outer layer and the inside was super light and fluffy. It went well with the curry, or to snack on on it's own.

Black Sticky Rice w Coconut Custard & Tumeric Caramel $14.50
To put a full stop to our meal (and to fill any remaining space in our bellies), we decided to get something sweet. We originally wanted to get the coffee panna cotta, but it was sold out so we went with the black sticky rice.

This was rather a heavy dessert, and I am referring to how much carb there was in the bowl and the level of sweetness. We only managed to eat the tip of the iceberg. The custard was more like an anti-custard. It was warm and dense in texture, we found it interesting, but it was not what we were expecting.

We found the food enjoyable, and each dish had it's Asian touch.

Mjølner is a viking-themed dungeon (I mean bar) nested in Redfern. From swords and armor to horn drinking vessels, every detail was carefully choreographed - that upon entry into the restaurant you feel you are time travelling to a lost world. This underground restaurant offers an extensive list of interesting cocktails and generous portions of meat dishes.

Aperitifs: Mead, Honey & Vermouth (Alcoholic); Honey, Bitter & Tonic (Non-alcoholic) - complementary
Before our meal, we were treated with a glass of aperitifs each. As non-alcoholics we went with the honey, bitter and tonic, which had a nice sweet fruity note. We were impressed by the experience and glad that they had a non-alcoholic option.

Cured Tri Tip $24
We ordered the cured beef expecting it to be firmer in texture and more flavourful like other cured meats we've had. Unfortunately, this one had a really mild flavour and tasted more like raw beef, which we were not a big fan of.

Roasted Bone Marrow $22
The bone marrow won our hearts, it was soft and smoky - almost like eating a fatty jelly that rendered away when it hit the tongue.

Charred Octopus Tentacle $22
This tentacle was cooked with great techniques, it was charred to perfection. The outside was slightly crispy and the inside was succulent and juicy.

To set the mood even more, Mjølner prepared a selection of knives for the diners to choose from for their mains. Each one is unique, and made it a more personal experience.

However, we decided not to use the knives in the end because on the day we didn't feel like too much meat and went with a vegetarian main...so we had mercy on the poor little eggplant.

Braised Eggplant, Tomato & Almond Crunch $24
I had to say as a main dish this can probably make someone happy if his/her tummy is as small as a mouse - which stood in great contrast with the gigantic meat mains that we saw. In terms of the taste, the eggplant was nice and soft, but I found the flavours didn't marry each other.

Food: 6/10
Service: 7/10
Atmosphere: 8.5/10

Highlight:
  • Interesting theme
  • Bone marrow & octopus were the standouts
Lowlight:
  • Menu on the website wasn't up to date, we came for the terrine which wasn't available
  • Food was slightly pricey, you are definitely paying for the experience

Harajuku Gyoza has been on our "To Go List" for a while, and finally we managed to visit on a weekend. This place was so lively and filled with a modern Japanese vibe. The menu is simple and quite straightforward, and offers a variety of delightful Gyoza as well as some staple dishes.

Smoked Salmon (Open Gyoza) $10
This open gyoza had taken a modern twist comparing to the traditional dumpling that is usually steamed/fried with fillings wrapped inside. Eating this was like having a Japanese taco that ticked all the sensory elements of taste, texture, look and smell. The salmon roe also pops in your mouth, adding a surprising element.

Pork & Prawn Gyoza $9.2
Plump dumplings are always my favourite, whether they are boiled or pan fried. These little fellows here were juicy and meaty, and were well balanced with the soysauce seasoning.

Chicken Katsu Curry $13.5
Katsu is something that comes across a Japanese menu fairly often, and at Harajuku it is no exception. The chicken had a golden crunchy coating, and the meat was tender. The curry sauce was rich and gooey, and if you can't handle the heat don't worry - it's pretty mild. A Japanese style carrot and radish relish served as a light refreshment.

Pork Belly Kakuni w Salad $14
There is nothing better than a well caramelized fatty pork belly. For me it is a familiar and homey dish.  I liked how the pork belly came in generous big chunks. The meat was so tender and flavourful (yes it was fatty, but not greasy if you know what I mean😜).

Soufflé Pancake $15
What is the best way to finish your meal other than a plate of super airy soufflé? One of the reasons we came here is for these soufflé (only available on Sundays), which is one of Harajuku Gyoza's signature desserts. This dessert was somewhere between a soufflé and a pancake, it was super soft and light which is very typical of Japanese desserts. There wasn't much flavour from the soufflé itself, so it was good to have the maple syrup and the chocolate sauce to go with it.

Overall, we had a great time here. If you are looking for a cheap satisfying feed then definitely give this place a try.

Food: 7/10
Service: 6/10
Atmosphere: 7/10

Highlight:
  • Authentic Japanese's quick bites
  • Good bang for buck
Lowlight:
  • Pancakes were good, but inconsistent (some looked better than others)
  • Pancakes were also a little pricey comparing to the other dishes

Pablo has finally launched their first shop in Sydney, bringing their Japanese cheese tarts featuring original, matcha and chocolate flavours. Mr Piggy and I have been longing for this moment. With all ingredients imported from Japan, shoppers can truly enjoy the authentic flavours just like they would from Pablo's stores in Japan. All tarts are freshly baked on the day, and the open kitchen gives a view of the staff working away.
Success at the end of the queue

The tarts come in two sizes, mini or large. For the mini tarts all 3 flavours are available. For large at the moment there are only original and matcha available.

Original $4.2 ea
The original flavour really lets you enjoy the humbleness of cheese tarts. The cheesy filling was super smooth and airy that we could keep eating one after another. The crispy tart shell was also cooked to perfection.

Matcha $4.5 ea
Matcha is probably the king of all ingredients in Japanese desserts, and this tart certainly serves it justice. The matcha fragrance kind of neutralises the richness of the cheese, leaving a bittersweet aftertaste. A sprinkle of match powder also helped emphasise the matcha flavour.

Chocolate $4.5 ea
The chocolate one was also really nice, the amount of cheese and chocolate was balanced well.

In the end it was a close call for Mr Piggy and I, we liked all the flavours. If we really had to pick - I prefer the matcha as it is less sweet comparing to the other two flavours. Mr Piggy prefers the original flavour.

Original Large $19.80
As for the large original cheese tart it was even better than the mini tarts. Although it is a large version of the original mini, in my opinion they tasted very different. Rather than having a really strong cheesy flavour, it had a strong eggy flavour (almost custard like), and the best thing about it was the texture! It was super soft and gooey, when cutting it open, it was as if the filling was about to ooze out.

If freshly baked tarts are not enough for you, there are also sabrel cheese cookies. I got to say these cookie are addictive, once you started having one, there is no stopping!
Sabrel Black $10.90

If cookies can't get any better, then think again! These black cookies are made using bamboo charcoal and black cocoa with a gouda cheese centre, and a pinch of truffle salt. Not only does it sound fancy, it tastes pretty fancy as well. We are definitely going back for more 😋
