Saint Peter

The story goes that Peter, the Saint, was originally a fisherman. Paddington's Saint Peter tells its own story featuring Australia's local seafood, with a menu that changes daily based on the catch of the day.

Salt & Vinegar Parsnips $10
If you guessed octopus tentacles you'd be wrong! We came back to Saint Peter for the signature salt & vinegar onion rings, which weren't on the menu today. Luckily the parsnips were there to save the day! Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, even though this was a vegetarian dish, you feel like you are not missing out on meat. Perhaps it was fried in the same oil they use to fry the fish and so it has absorbed all the fishy goodness.

Hervey Bay Scallop, Kelp Butter & Breadcrumbs $5ea
Nothing can go wrong with scallops, except for these ones were so thin it felt like we were getting half a scallop for $5.

Newcastle Red Sea Urchin Crumpet $28
Something so delicate as uni is usually best enjoyed unadulterated. The cold uni, served on a bowl of ice, was well complemented by the hot crumpet, which was crunchy and fluffy. A generous amount of salt flakes on the crumpet drew out the natural sweetness and umami of the uni. Pure pleasure with this uni - no unpleasant odour.

Crumbed Corner Inlet King George Whiting Sandwich $26
An impressive sandwich - in simple terms the Hermes version of Macca's Filet-O-Fish. The batter was crunchy and the fish meaty and juicy, and the best part was the zingy tartar sauce.

Belly Bacon & Egg English Muffin, Smoked Bonito Hashbrown $24
In case you haven't yet figured out that Saint Peter is all about seafood, this dish confirmed it for us. This was a polarising dish and a tale of two halves. On its own the smoked bonito hashbrown (left) is easily a 10/10. We felt like everything else didn't need to be there, and would have been happy if it was instead just two hashbrowns. We can't stop wondering what happened to the rest of the bacon, perhaps they were running low...

Batter Fried Wollongong Pink Ling, Chips & Condiments $30
Fish and chips doesn't get much better than this. A humble dish with its a own bit of theatre, as you poke through the fish, you hear the crisp cracking of the battered shell and discover the tender and meaty flesh inside. We loved the skin-on chips too, which boasted a strong potato flavour.

Condiments for the fish and chips
Lemon Tart $16
We regretted not getting the lemon tart on our previous visit (due to limited stomach space). It did not disappoint. We liked the texture of the tart, which starts to dissolve away when it meets the tongue, and fills the cavity with the fragrance of citrus.

Custard Tart $16
This sweet cousin of the lemon tart was a fierce competitor. Soft and wobbly, its texture resembles that of a pudding. If sour isn't your thing then be sure to get this one.
