Tao Restaurant & Bar - Queenstown
Typical but not too typical, Tao offers dumplings with fillings beyond just the classic pork & veggie combinations, as well as classic Chinese dishes. The restaurant is simple, yet calm and cozy.
Beef Brisket & Carrots Dumplings NZ$8 |
All the dumplings come in 4 pieces, this particular one is beef mince and carrot. Paring these two ingredients together is not that common and we found they didn't marry each other as intended. The skin was also a little dry and tough.
Sea Bass, Scallops, Calamari & Black Tiger Prawns NZ$8 |
I'm guessing the dumpling skin got it's colour from the calamari ink, but the flavour wasn't that obvious. Again the skin has the same textural problem as the beef dumpling.
Shumai NZ$8 |
Twice Cooked Pork w Pepper & Chili Sichuan Style NZ$28 |
Twice cooked pork is a classic Sichuan dish, and the secret is using the local specialty soybean paste. The pork belly was coated in the sauce that was quite flavourful.
