Fusion cuisine is no new concept in Sydney, and Paper Bird revolves around the idea of East meets West by offering dishes that are inspired by Asian flavours.

Taco-Yaki $8 ea
The team had decided to go about this dish in a not so conventional way - deconstructed takoyaki. Even though this dish dosen't look like the real deal, but with all the right elements in place, the flavours were spot on. The charred octopus, shaved bonito flakes and mayo plus the taco at the bottom really grasp the essence of takoyaki.

Menbosha $10 ea
Fried prawn toasty sounds familiar? It is common dish on the menu for yum cha. The toasts were super crunchy, however the prawn flavour was lost in the oiliness.

Scallion Pancake $15
Jamon and scallion pancake, what an odd combination. Interestingly the two paired up nicely, the jamon was rich in flavour and melts in your mouth instantly. Eating it along with the pancake almost feels like having a pancake sandwich.

Shrimp Brined Fried Chicken $25
The golden fried chicken was a dish that's hard to miss. I have to say the chicken was cooked with a beautiful crispy skin and the meat was tender and juicy with a sweet soy flavour.  Traditionally Korean fried chicken isn't complete without the pickled radish, and we were glad they had them. The acidity of the pickled radish helped to cut through the oiliness of chicken. If we had to pick a flaw, it would be that we wished there was more pickled radish. One more thing we would liked even better is if they made a spicy more savoury version of the chicken, and then we would be on cloud 9.

Steamed Egg Pudding $13
We loved the texture of the egg pudding (almost panna cotta like), it was so creamy and silky smooth. The grapefruit sorbet gave a nice zing to the dish, and the crunchy coconut flakes were a clever way to add a textural element.

Milk Bingsu $13
Milk flavoured shaved ice doesn't sound like much, but this simple idea was well executed. The bingsu had a beautiful creamy flavour, the texture was light and fluffy. The hazelnut ice-cream was smooth and creamy, however the hazelnut flavour was a little subtle. With all these creamy flavours in place, the yuzu curd played a critical role. The yuzu carried an unmistakable fragrance, and the acidity tied everything together.

Food: 8.5/10
Service: 8/10
Atmosphere: 7/10

Highlight:
  • Well executed inventiveness
Lowlight:
  • We wish there was more pickled radish!

Social Brew is another cafe that's going on our brunch list! Mr Piggy and I are always on the lookout for nice cafes serving brunch for the weekend. After discovering some scrumptious photos online, we decided to pay a visit.

The setting is pretty casual, and no queuing was required, which was a relief (especially when you haven't had any food).

Wood Smoked Salmon Benedict, Sautéed Kale & Wasabi Hollandaise Served on Brioche $18.5
A simple dish that was spot on, smoky salmon, runny egg yolk, crunchy kale, soft and buttery brioche, and last but not least creamy hollandaise... everything you can ask for was on this plate.

Ricotta Hotcakes, Maple Marinated Strawberries w/ Pistachio Butter $15 Bacon $4
One of the best pancakes I ever had, the texture was soft and fluffy. To be honest, I didn't think these pancakes would be that good, the only minus was the bacon was a little too charred.

Apple, Beets & Ginger $6/ Salted caramel $6
We liked how the juice had a nice gingery punch to it, as for the shake, it was a little sweet for us. Overall, the food was great and the portion was generous.

Food: 7/10
Service: 6/10
Atmosphere: 6/10

Highlight:
  • Nice cafe food
Lowlight:
  • The atmosphere is not as nice as some of the more posh cafes

Nishiki Wagyu Yakiniku, located in the Lower North Shore, pride themselves as the only Yakiniku restaurant specialising in full blood wagyu beef. The restaurant offers a la carte as well as a buffet menu. Mr Piggy and I went with the buffet menu so that we had more choices.

We got a variety of cuts to try including the wagyu rib finger, wagyu rib meat, wagyu rump, wagyu outside skirt, wagyu flap meat, wagyu oyster blade, and wagyu rib with bone. The different cuts all varied in terms of flavour and texture. Our favoutite cuts were the rib meat that was juicy and tender, and both the rib with bone and rib finger, which had a nice chew to it.

The meat was covered in stunning marble which is what wagyu is all about! All the cuts cooked really fast due the the high fat content, without being greasy at all. Each piece of meat literally just melts in your mouth!

Garlic in Sesame Oil; Assorted Mushrooms in Butter, Onions
Assorted Kimchi, Stamina Scallop; Spicy Wagyu Beef Soup; Dumplings
These side dishes were quite standard, but kept us fed when we were waiting for the beef to cook.

Sweet sauce; Salt in Sesame oil; Soy sauce
All the wagyu came together on a big plate, which made it a little difficult to tell the different cuts apart...we had to check with the staff.

Mushrooms cooked in butter were delicious too.

Succulent wagyu on rice 😘

Pork Belly
We also ordered some pork belly, it was ok, but again the wagyu was the lightlight of the night.

Pork Neck
We've never had any success with barbecuing pork neck, despite the marbled meat. Somehow we always ended up with chewy pork (which isn't pleasant at all)...this time is no exception.

To make it a truly wagyu experience, we ordered a second round of meat...

As you might have guessed, by the end of the meal we could barely walk out the door...I think we have challenged our tummies to the limit this time, however we truly enjoyed the wagyu here. This is as good as Australian wagyu gets in Sydney.

Food: 8.5/10
Service: 6.5/10
Atmosphere: 6/10

Highlight:
  • Marbled wagyu
Lowlight:
  • The atmosphere is not as flash as the wagyu
  • There is a 100minute time limit from when you sit down
